I am currently working in two
genres: abstract and representational. While at first glance
the two may appear to be widely divergent, they are actually
quite similar in process and each serves to inform and strengthen
the other. While there are simlarities in process and design
between the two genres, I have different goals for each one.
Therefore, I include here separate statements for each genre
of work.
Artist's Statement:
Representational
In my representational work, I frequently use the human figure
as a means of investigating various psychological/emotional states:
anxiety, serenity, isolation, harmony.... I also use the figure
to explore the complexities of being human as we hide our thoughts,
emotions, and feelings from those around us. While a degree of
realism in my work provides an anchor for the viewer, I use expressive
color, form, and images, as well as transparent and translucent
media to confront and to draw the viewer into the psychological
drama of the piece. The precise circumstances underlying the
images in my works are not necessarily significant. I prefer
to have the viewer enrich the artwork with their own experiences.
Artist's Statement:
Abstract
My abstract work is the result
of an intuitive exploration of color, line, and shape. The rich
colors and textures, as well as the process of "letting go"
to create these works, reflect my interest in the personal journey
(that is, the choices people make, where we have been, where we
are going, etcetera). I often incorporate signposts of the concrete
world by collaging maps, writings, and other materials into the
works.
