In this recent body of work I combine old master techniques of drawing
and glazing with contemporary concepts of collage, image juxtaposition,
and color theory to create works that are at once familiar yet also
novel and mysterious. I am interested in the creation, destruction,
and re-construction of these paintings. I will spend hours creating
a beautiful painting on a wooden panel, then I deface the painting
by scribbling and rubbing out sections. I even cut some of the works
into sections with my jig saw. The text in the paintings refers either to the paintings themselves or to the source of inspiration for the works. The text is difficult to read because it has been encrypted using a variety of "pencil and paper" methods; they can theoretically be cracked without the aid of a computer. There are enough clues in the images to decipher the text, if the viewer chooses to do so. |
